Lockstone, Concrete & Landscaping

Lockstone paths, concrete pads, sod and final grading to finish the job and bring the yard back better than before.

Finish the Job Right

Lockstone, concrete and landscaping are the last step after a dig, and a way to upgrade the yard on their own. We do the base work with our own equipment, so the surface on top lasts.

01

Lockstone paths and driveways

Interlocking stone walkways, driveways and patios laid on a compacted base.

02

Concrete pads

Pads for garages, sheds, hot tubs and equipment, with the base prepared under them.

03

Sod

Fresh sod laid on prepared, graded topsoil for an instant lawn.

04

Final grading

The finished grade around the house sloped away from the foundation so water drains off.

Our Process

  1. 01

    Site visit and free estimate

We look at the area, the drainage and the access, and talk through the layout and materials you want.

  2. 02

    Dig out and prepare

We dig out to the right depth for the job and grade the base so water drains the right way.

  3. 03

    Build the base

Granular base is laid and compacted in layers. A good base is what keeps lockstone flat and stops concrete from cracking.

  4. 04

    Lay, pour or sod

Lockstone is laid in your pattern with edge restraint, concrete pads are formed and poured, and sod is rolled out on fresh topsoil.

  5. 05

    Finish and clean up

Joints are filled, edges are graded and the site is cleaned up so the yard is better than before.

Lockstone, Concrete or Sod

Each surface has its strengths. Here is how they compare:

01

Lockstone

Interlocking stone comes in many colours and patterns, and single stones can be lifted and reset if the ground moves. It costs more to install than plain concrete.

02

Concrete

A concrete pad is a solid, flat surface that suits garages, sheds and heavy loads. It cannot be lifted and reset, so cracks have to be repaired or the pad replaced.

03

Sod or seed

Sod gives you a finished lawn the day it goes down. Seed costs less but takes weeks to fill in and is easily washed out before it takes root.

What Affects the Cost

Every price comes down to a few things:

  • Size of the area: Square footage of the path, driveway, pad or lawn.
  • Materials: Stone style and pattern, concrete thickness, sod or seed.
  • Base work: How much digging and granular base the ground needs.
  • Access: Room for equipment and trucks to reach the area.
  • Grading and drainage: Extra work needed to slope water away from buildings.

A Base That Lasts

Northern frost lifts anything sitting on a poor base. We dig, grade and compact the base ourselves so your path, driveway or pad stays flat. Honest quotes, and we stick to our original price.

Lockstone, Concrete & Landscaping FAQ

How much does a lockstone driveway cost in Thunder Bay?

The price depends on the size of the driveway, the stone and pattern you choose, how much base work the ground needs and the access for equipment. We give you a free estimate before any work starts.

Lockstone or concrete, which is better?

Lockstone comes in more colours and patterns and single stones can be lifted and reset if the ground moves. Concrete is a solid, flat surface that suits garages, sheds and heavy loads. The right choice depends on how you will use the space.

Why do lockstone and concrete heave in the winter?

Frost heave happens when water in the ground under a path, driveway or pad freezes and expands. A deep, compacted granular base that drains well keeps water out from underneath and keeps the surface flat.

When is the best time to lay sod?

Sod can go down any time the ground is not frozen. Spring and early fall are best because the cooler weather and rain help the roots take hold.

Can you fix the yard after excavation work?

Yes. Lockstone paths, concrete pads, sod and final grading finish the job and bring the yard back better than before.
