Retaining Walls
Armour stone walls built to hold. We have built walls over 100 feet long, engineered to stand up to northern frost.
What a Retaining Wall Does
A retaining wall holds back soil so you can level a slope, stop erosion or make room for a driveway, patio or building. We build them for homes, cottages and commercial properties across Northwestern Ontario.
Sloped yards
Turn a hill into level, usable space for a lawn, patio, garden or parking.
Erosion and washouts
Hold back soil that slides, slumps or washes out every spring.
Driveways and lots
Support cuts and fills beside driveways, buildings and property lines.
How We Build a Retaining Wall
- 01
Site visit and free estimate
We look at the slope, the soil, the drainage and the access, and talk through the height and length you need.
- 02
Design and permits
Taller walls, and walls near a property line, a building or a public sidewalk, can need an engineer's design and a building permit. We check before we start.
- 03
Excavate and build the base
We dig below the frost line where needed and build a compacted granular base so the wall sits level and stays put.
- 04
Set the wall and the drainage
Stones are set course by course, with drainage pipe and clear stone behind the wall so water cannot build up and push it over.
- 05
Backfill and finish
We backfill and compact in layers, then grade and clean up so the area is ready to use.
Armour Stone Walls
Armour stone walls
Large natural stones give a rugged look that fits rural, waterfront and cottage properties. Every stone is a different shape, so the wall takes more fitting and the face is uneven.
What Affects the Cost
Every retaining wall price comes down to a few things:
- Height and length: Taller and longer walls need more material and more digging.
- Stone size: The size of the armour stones and how many the wall needs.
- Soil and drainage: Wet clay and heavy loads need a bigger base and more drainage.
- Access: Room for equipment and trucks to reach the wall.
- Engineering and permits: Needed for some taller walls and walls near property lines.
Built for Northern Frost
Frost pushes on a wall every winter. A deep, compacted base and good drainage behind the wall keep it standing straight year after year. Honest quotes, and we stick to our original price.

Retaining Walls FAQ
How much does a retaining wall cost in Thunder Bay?
The price depends on the height and length of the wall, the material, the soil and drainage on your property, the access for equipment and whether the wall needs an engineered design. We give you a free estimate before any work starts.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Ontario?
Under the Ontario Building Code, retaining walls over 1 metre high next to a public property, a building entrance or a neighbouring property can need a permit and an engineered design. Rules vary by municipality, so we check before we start.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Most retaining walls fail because water builds up behind them or the base was not built right. Frost, poor drainage and a base that is too shallow let the wall lean, bulge or crack. We build every wall with a compacted base and drainage behind it.
How long is the biggest wall you have built?
We have built walls over 100 feet long, engineered to stand up to northern frost.
